Chibu Privacy Policy

Overview

Chibu ("we", "us", or "the app") is a family chore-and-rewards organiser for parents and their children. The core idea is simple and wholesome: a child completes a chore, earns points, and unlocks a reward or screen time that the parent has chosen. This Privacy Policy explains what information Chibu collects, how it is used, where it is stored, and the rights you have as a parent or guardian.

We have built Chibu around a single privacy promise: your family's data stays in your own private Apple iCloud account. We never see it, we never sell it, and there are no third-party trackers, advertisers, or analytics companies involved.

Who We Collect Data From

Chibu is designed to be used by a parent or legal guardian together with their children, including children under 13. All data entry — children's names, avatars, chores, rewards, and any optional photos or location — is set up and controlled by the parent or guardian.

We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children, and we do not require a child to create an account, provide an email address, or sign in. A child simply uses the family device the parent has set up.

What Information We Collect

Chibu only ever holds the information you choose to enter. Depending on the features you use, this may include:

Child profile — a display name or nickname you choose, an avatar emoji, and a colour theme.
Child profile photo (optional) — if you add a photo for a child, it is stored in your family's private iCloud and synced to your other family devices. It is never uploaded to us or any third party.
Chores — chore titles, point values, schedules, and completion records.
Photo proof of a completed chore (optional) — if you enable photo proof, the photo a child submits to show a chore is done is stored in your private iCloud only.
Rewards — reward titles, their point cost, and redemption history.
Points and streaks — points balances, streak counters, and progress.
Screen-time settings (optional) — if you use Apple Screen Time features, the apps you choose for a child to unlock with earned points are managed entirely by Apple's on-device Screen Time system.
Location (optional, and only with explicit permission) — if you turn on the location feature, the child's device location is used to show a map pin and to trigger location-based rewards (for example, "arrived home"). Location is stored only in your private iCloud and is never sent to our servers.

We do not collect: your email address, phone number, contacts, government IDs, web browsing history, advertising identifiers, or behavioural analytics of any kind.

The Child Is Always Aware (No Covert Monitoring)

Chibu is a parental-control and family-motivation app — not covert surveillance or "stalkerware". When monitoring or location features are switched on, the child using the device can see that they are active. We deliberately do not offer any hidden, disguised, or secret tracking mode. Location and screen-time features are visible in the app and rely on the device's own system permission prompts, which the user must approve.

How Your Data Is Stored

All family data is stored exclusively in your family's private Apple iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit framework (the private database). This means:

Data lives in iCloud — Apple's private, encrypted cloud storage — not on any server we own or operate.
We, the developers of Chibu, have no access to your family's data at any time. We cannot read your children's names, photos, chores, points, or location.
Data is protected by Apple's iCloud security, including end-to-end encryption for private databases where your account supports it (such as Advanced Data Protection).
Syncing only happens between your own devices and the family members you have invited, all within Apple's Family Sharing and iCloud system.

If you do not have iCloud enabled, your data is stored locally on your device only and is not synced anywhere.

Apple Screen Time — Not MDM

Where Chibu offers screen-time features, it uses Apple's official Screen Time framework (Family Controls / Managed Settings / Device Activity). Chibu does not use Mobile Device Management (MDM) profiles, VPNs, or any technology that gives us access to your child's apps, messages, web traffic, or device data. App and screen-time choices are processed on the device by Apple's own system; we never receive that information.

Third-Party Services

Chibu relies on Apple and first-party services only:

Apple CloudKit — private iCloud storage and family sync.
Apple Screen Time (Family Controls / Managed Settings / Device Activity) — optional on-device app and screen-time management.
Apple StoreKit — in-app purchase processing for the optional Chibu Plus subscription.

We do not use any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, crash-reporting services, marketing tools, or social-media trackers. No data is shared with, sold to, rented to, or processed by any company other than Apple.

No Advertising, No Tracking, No Data Selling

Chibu contains no advertisements. We do not track users for advertising, use cross-app tracking identifiers, build user profiles, or share data with data brokers. We never sell or rent your data — not your information, and certainly not your children's. The app shows no behavioural, retargeting, or interest-based ads of any kind.

In-App Purchases

Chibu offers an optional Chibu Plus subscription and a one-time lifetime purchase, processed entirely through Apple's App Store. Purchase records are managed by Apple and are governed by Apple's own privacy policy (apple.com/privacy). We receive only a confirmation that a valid purchase is active — never your payment-card details. See SUBSCRIPTION_TERMS.md for full subscription terms.

Verifiable Parental Consent (COPPA)

Because Chibu is set up and operated by a parent or guardian on their own device, and all data stays in that family's private iCloud account, the parent is in direct control of every piece of information at all times.

Before any optional feature that involves a child's photo or location can be used, the parent must:

Set up the app as a parent or guardian, and
Grant the relevant device permission through Apple's own system prompt (for example, the camera, photo library, or location permission).

This combination — a parent operating the app on their device and explicitly approving each system permission — provides verifiable parental consent for the limited information Chibu holds. No information about a child is ever transmitted to us.

Your Parental Rights

Under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, and similar laws, parents and guardians have the right to:

Review the personal information held about their child.
Delete their child's information.
Refuse further collection or use of their child's information.

Because everything is stored in your own iCloud account, you can exercise these rights at any time, instantly:

To review information about a child: open Chibu → Family → select the child.
To delete an individual child's records: open Chibu → Family → select the child → Delete.
To delete all family data: open Chibu → Settings → Delete All Data. This permanently removes all children, chores, rewards, completions, photos, and history from the device and your iCloud.
To remove everything from iCloud entirely: delete the app, then remove "Chibu" from iCloud in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage.
To stop optional features: turn off the location or screen-time feature in the app at any time, or revoke the relevant permission in your device's Settings.

Data Retention

Your data is kept for as long as you use Chibu. When you delete the app, local data is removed from your device. iCloud data remains in your iCloud account until you delete it manually using the steps above. We keep no copies of your data anywhere else, because we never hold it in the first place.

International Users

Chibu is available worldwide. Wherever you are, your data is stored in your own Apple iCloud account and handled by Apple under Apple's privacy practices. We do not move, mirror, or process your data on any infrastructure of our own.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top of this document. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the app after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
